About TabMender
TabMender is a set of free tools for the characters you cannot see: tabs and spaces, line endings, trailing whitespace and the invisible Unicode characters that sneak into text and code.
What it does
- Converts indentation between tabs and spaces, changes indent width and shows mixed indentation line by line.
- Finds zero-width characters, bidi controls, tag characters and look-alike letters.
- Converts line endings, trims trailing whitespace, fixes tabs in YAML and Makefiles, builds .editorconfig files and aligns columns.
How it works
Every tool runs in your browser. Text you paste and files you open are processed on your device and never uploaded; there are no accounts and no cookies. The site itself is a set of static files. It uses Cloudflare Web Analytics, which counts page views without cookies or cross-site tracking and never receives what you type, paste or drop into the tools. The details are on the privacy page.
The look is borrowed from the continuous-form paper of dot-matrix printers (and, after dark, from amber terminals), because that is where tabs and spaces first had to line up.
Limits
The tools work on plain text in UTF-8, UTF-16 or Windows-1252. Indentation detection is a heuristic, so check its guess (it shows how confident it is) before converting a whole project. The YAML check uses the open-source yaml parser; your own parser may be stricter or more lenient.
